A rare opportunity to design a family homestead in country NSW

Having been passed down through the client’s family over several generations, we were given a rare and important opportunity to design a new homestead for a working sheep farm in Yass, NSW. With an existing cottage that had long been the centre of the family’s life on the farm, we were tasked with considering and selecting a new site for the homestead that would optimise the open space of the farm and maximise its orientation to natural light and views.

The result is a sprawling single storey homestead that both compliments the property and is a functional element of its working life. The homestead is of a scale that comfortably accommodates a multi-generational family and encourages its use as a hub for family occasions.

An interesting opportunity was also presented by the project in how to treat the existing cottage and its gardens which had been established and much-loved over several generations. As the cottage was at the end of its lifespan and no longer required, it was decided that the building would be removed but its footings retained to indicate where this residence was once located in the landscape. Over time, the established gardens will be expanded across the site and a formal garden will compliment the new homestead.

Architecture, Interior Architecture & Interior Design: Hampton Architecture

“Hampton Architecture designed a new house for our country property. It is a spacious and expansive open plan house and, although surrounded by verandahs, is light filled, even on the rainiest of days.”

Andrew and Frances Elsegood, owners

“Adam made the whole design process as easy as possible, listening to our requirements and needs. He was in all ways helpful and had wonderful ideas and a clear vision of what we wanted.

We found Adam helpful, caring and interested right to the end of the build.”
